Their mission is to "provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world."

Federal institution accountable for American public and their stakeholders.

"Huerta is responsible for the safety and efficiency of the largest aerospace system in the world. He oversees a $15.9 billion dollar budget, over 47,000 employees and is focused on ensuring the agency and its employees are the best prepared and trained professionals to meet the growing demands and requirements of the industry. Huerta also oversees the FAA's multi-billion dollar NextGen air traffic control modernization program as the United States shifts from ground-based radar to state-of-the-art satellite technology."

"Responsible for helping to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the largest aerospace system in the world – with over 50,000 operations daily – as well as regulating the safety of equipment and operators of the U.S. aviation industry. Whitaker also serves as the Chief NextGen Officer and is responsible for the development and implementation of FAA's NextGen modernization of the air traffic control system."

Appointed by Obama with advice and consent of the Senate.

The bill was approved by "voice vote". While congress works on a longer aviation policy. Senate action is still needed. The FAA's operating authority is still is due to expire on March 31.

"The top Republican and top Democrat on the US Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee have introduced a bipartisan FAA reauthorization bill that does not include any proposal to remove air traffic control (ATC) from FAA, delivering a serious blow to the effort to create an independent ATC corporation.

The proposed Senate bill, would authorize FAA through Sept. 30, 2017. Both chambers [house and senate] would have to pass an identical bill to be signed by President Barack Obama for the reauthorization to become law."

Hmm? Interesting!

FAA History

Federal Aviation Administration

"The approaching era of jet travel, and a series of midair collisions (most notable was the 1956 Grand Canyon mid-air collision), prompted passage of the Federal Aviation Act of 1958. This legislation gave the CAA's functions to a new independent body, the Federal Aviation Agency. The act transferred air safety regulation from the CAB to the new FAA, and also gave the FAA sole responsibility for a common civil-military system of air navigation and air traffic control. The FAA's first administrator, Elwood R. Quesada, was a former Air Force general and adviser to President Eisenhower." (Federal Aviation Administration)
