Mr. Garcia - AP Psychology

  • The most "primal" part of the human brain.
  • Responsible for "vital functions" such as swallowing, breathing, etc.
  • Divided into the midbrain, the pons, and the medulla oblongata.
  • Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to recover from an injury by "chang[ing] its physical structure and rew[iring] its neural connections."

The Limbic System

The Temporal Lobe

  • Hypothalamus - Maintains homeostasis
  • Thalamus - Relays senses to the brain
  • Amygdala - Mediates emotions and aggressive/defensive feelings
  • Hippocampus - Involved with memory
  • Lobe responsible for "understanding language, as well as memory and emotion."

The Occipital Lobe

The Parietal Lobe

The Frontal Lobe

The Brain's "Setup"

  • The brain is divided into two halves and four lobes.
  • The "right" side of the brain is the "rational side" of the brain while the "left" side is more associated with artistic abilities.
  • Lobe responsible for "motor behavior," personality, and "orientation to person, time, place, or situation."
  • Lobe responsible for processing the sense of sight.
  • The Optic Nerve carries the signals of sight to the back of the brain (Occipital Lobe) for vision to be interpreted.
  • Lobe responsible for processing sensations involving touch.
