Mr. Garcia - AP Psychology
- The most "primal" part of the human brain.
- Responsible for "vital functions" such as swallowing, breathing, etc.
- Divided into the midbrain, the pons, and the medulla oblongata.
- Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to recover from an injury by "chang[ing] its physical structure and rew[iring] its neural connections."
The Limbic System
The Temporal Lobe
- Hypothalamus - Maintains homeostasis
- Thalamus - Relays senses to the brain
- Amygdala - Mediates emotions and aggressive/defensive feelings
- Hippocampus - Involved with memory
- Lobe responsible for "understanding language, as well as memory and emotion."
The Occipital Lobe
The Parietal Lobe
The Frontal Lobe
The Brain's "Setup"
- The brain is divided into two halves and four lobes.
- The "right" side of the brain is the "rational side" of the brain while the "left" side is more associated with artistic abilities.
- Lobe responsible for "motor behavior," personality, and "orientation to person, time, place, or situation."
- Lobe responsible for processing the sense of sight.
- The Optic Nerve carries the signals of sight to the back of the brain (Occipital Lobe) for vision to be interpreted.
- Lobe responsible for processing sensations involving touch.
