3. Interestiing

2. Credibility

A good story captures and holds our attention. The bottom line is we are fixated on good stories. We are engaged and invested in what's going to happen next.

Typically we like to be convinced a story is true or possible

  • External Truths- or life as it is
  • Internal truths of humanity--life as we think it is or should be (love conquers all, good guys win)
  • Semblance of truth-life as it never was or never will be

1. A Unified Plot

Again this refers back to the thematic elements we've previously discussed.

The plot should decvelop the theme and support it.

often it's a single continuous thread of action

4. Paradox

A good story is simple and complex.

The best example I can give you is Forrest Gump. The story is not complicated to follow and the protagonist is simplistic in and of himself. Yet the performance by Hanks, the depth of the themes and the dramatic elements creates a simple yet complex outcome

Fictional and Dramatic

Elements in Film

IB Film -Eckman

Literature + Film

5. Emotional restraint

Literature and film share many elements in how they communicate ideas. In both you can study plot, characterization conflict, etc.

For effective Analysis we need to break films down, starting with answering the question

WHAT MAKES AGOOD STORY?

To keep this simple, a good story is not

overly emotional. We shouldn't be laughing

when we are supposed to be crying. We shouldn't be crying when we should be laughing.

In other words avoid sentimentality
