Statistics Estonia
In 2012 natural gas, liquid fuels, coal were imported for domestic consumption.
Statistics Estonis
Domestic energy products exported in 2012 were shale oil, electricity, peat and wood products.

The Eesti and Balti power plants in Narva are the most powerful oil shale-fired power plants in the world. Most of electricity for homes and industries in Estonia comes from Narva.
Statistics Estonis
In 2012 the share of electricity generated from renewable souces was 15,2 %.
In final energy consuption it was 25,9 %.

Paide wood-fuel-based combined heat and power (CHP) plant produces 8 MW of heating energy and 2 MW of electricity. People living in houses of flats in Paide can get energy for heating there. Tubes and pipes from power plant go to each house. People have radiators on the walls where hot water circulates. This is called central heating system.

OIL SHALE -
our most important natural resource.
Oil shale is mined in open cast mines and...

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Oil shale can be used directly as a fuel for producing
energy or synthetic oil.
In 2012, 81% of electricity was produced from oil shale.
Last year 18,7 million tons of oil shale was mined.
Oil shale is a sedimentary rock formed on the bottom of lakes
and seas 400 - 450 million years ago. Oil shale is made from
the organic substances.
Oil shale and environment problems:
minings change the landscape, disturb groundwater, energy power plants produce a lot of CO 2 and ashes.

WIND

Oil shale is found in north-eastern part of Estonia.
There were 126 turbines installed by the end of 2012 in Estonia.
Last year the wind turbines produced about 5,5 % of the total electricity consumption in Estonia.
PEAT comes from bogs

GARBAGE, WASTE
WOOD
Biomass is produced from low-quality wood, scrub, reeds and agricultural waste. Estonia has large resources of biomass.

Peat consists of peat moss plant.

...wood pellets.
In 2012, about 90 % of the wood pellets were exported.

Peat briquette for heating
Eesti Energia started using waste to produce energy at Iru Power Plant in 2013, where a modern waste-to-energy power unit was built.
The Iru waste-to-energy unit can incinerate up to 220,000 tons of waste per year.

In many private houses there are stoves heated with wood.

The Linnamäe hydroelectric plant has the highest production capacity of all the hydroelectric plants
in Estonia at 1.2 MW.
Peat deposits
There are quite a lot of hydroelectric plants in Estonia, but on a global scale these are still micro hydroelectric plants.

SOLAR ENERGY
...wood chips for central heating power plants
Solar energy in Estonia is not very important yet. There are very few households using solar energy in Estonia.
