Archeabacteria
Methanogens
- Number of cells: 2 different cells Methanobacterium spp. and Methanopyrus kandleri.
- Cell type : Prokaryotic is an organism whose cells do not have a nucleus in them.
- How they obtain energy : Methanogens obtain their energy by using carbon dioxide and hydorgen gas. Some of the carbon dioxide reacts with and is reduced by hydrogen to produce methane.

Quiz
1. Are Methanogens found in the muck of swamps?
yes or no?
2. Are they found in the guts of termites? Yes or no?
3. Can they form in the human body? Yes or no?
4. What shape are the Methanogens ?
A. Circular B. Rod-shaped
C. Spherical D. Tringular-shaped
5. Can they survive in hot temperature? Yes or No?
Cell Walls
Their (Archaea) cell walls do not contain peptidoglycan , and they have some of the same proteins that eukahyotes do.
Habitat: Methanogens are found in the muck of swamps and marshes, hydrothermal vents, porous rock, sewage sludge, and in the gut of termites.
Earliest
organisms
One of the earliest organisms in this kingdom were the Thermophilic (heat loving) methanogens are found terrestrially in volcanic hot springs and sofataras, where temperatures span between 40 to 100 degrees Celsius, and in marine environments in undersea hydrothermal vents where, due to pressure, temperatures can reach 350 degrees Celsius.e of the earliest organisms in this kingdom were the
Benefits or uses:
- Methanogens can be used to produce methane.
- They remove carbon dioxide from the environment.
Harms:
- They aren't harmful to humans.
- But because of the methane they produce they contribute to the greenhouse effect.
Examples:
- Methanobacterium bryantii
- Methanobacterium formicum
- Methanobrevibacter gottschalkii
- Methanococcoides burtonii
Methanogens:
Unique characteristics:
- Methanogens are usually sperical or rod shaped.
- They lack peptidoglycan, which is a polymer that is found in cell walls.
- Most methanogens are anaerobic which means they can function with out oxygen.'
- They are organishms that produce methane, a colorless, odorless, flammable gas, as a by product.
- They are prokaryotes, which means they are single celled organisms.
