STYLE/AESTHETICS

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

MOOD

What will your style be?

How will you incorporate this style throughout your background and character design?

View other animators' work to see how they create their style.

What is happening scene by scene?

Do you need more than one background?

What is the mood of your animation?

Scary? Peaceful? Joyful?

Exciting? Adventurous?

Silly? Fun? Strange?

So many choices!

Mediums

You might think that you need to stick with the medium you chose. For example, if you are doing a claymation you need a sculpey background. However, this simply isn't true. The sky is the limit! Mix and Match!

Choices for backgrounds:

* Clay

* Paper

* Mixed media/collage

* Sewing/fabric

* Photography

* Drawings/paintings

* Computer Generated

* The list goes on and on - use your imagination!

When looking at each, think:

What can I determine by looking at this background?

Considerations for your background

WHERE

Where is your animation taking place?

A house? A pool? Library? Inside a book?

Another state? Country? Planet?

What does this place look like?

How do your characters interact with this environment?

The Setting

WHEN

Future? Past? Today?

Morning? Afternoon? Night? Middle of the night?

What kind of light?

Backgrounds are necessary in animation.

Backgrounds:

* Provide information

Where is the animation taking place?

When is the time period?

What is happening?

* Can create the "mood"

* Can demonstrate your style/aesthetics
