We've all heard the saying "Don't judge a book by its cover." We've also heard "People aren't always what they seem." At one point or another, all of us have judged and based our opinions solely on a person's looks. Throughout the semester, we've read countless stories, all containing the reoccurring theme of: "Appearances can be deceptive." It's in human nature to do this but we should at least try to not base our judgement on looks, otherwise this could be our downfall.
One of the most obvious examples would be from Lamb to the Slaughter. The protagonist; Mary Maloney, exemplifies this theme very well. When the Police find out about her
husband's death, they never once suspect or question the supposed "innocent" wife. People
viewed Mary as a caring and loving wife and soon-to-be mother. No one thought Mary could be a cunning and sly murderer, especially the murderer of her husband Patrick. The Police judged Mary by her looks, and not once gave a second thought that she was the mastermind behind her husband's death.
Everyone in Verona, including her family saw
Juliet as an obedient and respectful daughter
who would do exactly what her parent's told her to do. Nobody would ever believe that Juliet would marry behind her parent's back, especially to the family's enemy. No one would ever think that Juliet would do anything without her parent's permission. If people would have taken the time to know Juliet, the outcome would not have resulted in death as well. It's these stereotypes that turn our decision into a biased one.
Multiple films can represent this theme very well. One in particular is She's the Man. In this film, the protagonist; Viola, disguises herself as her twin brother to get into his exclusive university and play on their soccer team. The
reasoning behind Viola's plan was because the girls
soccer team at her university was cancelled and the
coach for the boys team would not let them try out. This theme is shown through this movie because as a girl, no one thought she was good enough to play on the boy's soccer team, but when she poses as her brother, everyone thought she was good at soccer because of her gender and not her talents. This just proves how stereotypes influence societies view on certain people.
Some themes are able to prove
themselves in real life events.
An article I found that proves
that stereotypes can have an
effect and influence on our
judgement on a person. In this
situation, a little girl was saved
by a 15-year-old teen named
Temar Boggs. No one thought
he and his friends were going to
save this girl. They stereotyped
him and his friends as a "no good"
teen. In this case even though his
appearance was deceptive, he
ended up saving a little girl from her
kidnapper. This just goes to show
you that you should be careful on who
you judge, they could be your hero next.
...
This just proves that some people are not always what they seem to be. This leads to the next example which is Romeo and Juliet.
