- Alcohol expands uniformly.

- Alcohol is fairly inexpensive.

- It has a low freezing point (-115 degree centigrade) therefore it is very suitable for place where the temperature gets very low.

- Not poisonous, which is safe to use

(safety for human and environment)

Disadvantages

THANK YOU

- Low boiling point

- Not react quickly to temperature change

- Condesation

- The typical shelf life of an alcohol thermometer is significantly shorter than that of a mercury thermometer

- It needs to be dyed, since it's colourless.

How to use the alcohol thermometer properly:

• When using an alcohol thermometer in warm water, you have to keep the top part of the thermometer warm as well. If the top is cooler than the bottom, the alcohol will distill and condensate on the walls, which can cause an inaccurate reading.

Alcohol

How to use the alcohol thermometer properly:

• Do not place it in a sunny spot or near the stove. • Do not use it to measure a high temperature because alcohol has a low boiling point. • Be careful for breaking the thermometer.

Alcohol, which is used as a thermometric liquid, has the following characteristic properties:

• Alcohol has a very low freezing point of about −112 degree Celsius, which makes the alcohol temperature suitable in low temperature.

• Alcohol has a low boiling point of about 78oC

• Alcohol expands more than mercury.

• Alcohol is not a good conductor of heat.

How the alcohol thermometer does Works?

Alcohol thermometer works by letting the alcohol touched with the surroundings through the bulb. The alcohol will expand and raise the capillary as the temperature goes up. In the other hand, it will contract, which makes the alcohol goes down, as temperature decreases.

Why we use Alcohol in thermometer:

Alcohol thermometer is popular because its nontoxic, which means in case of the thermometer is broken, it will not harm to human health or the environment. However, people usually added a dye to the alcohol because alcohol is transparent. The most common color is red, but the other colors also can be used as well.

How does the thermometer measure?

An alcohol thermometer is a tube of glass contained dyed alcohol which will extend into the narrow column when it is used. Along the tube, it is marked with the lines that perform number of degree. The alcohol thermometer is easy to use by reading the level of red alcohol compares with the marked edge of the tube.
