Oropharyngeal Airway

Nasopharyngeal Airway

THE END

Size

To select a NPA choose one that is the same size as the patient's pinky finger.

Choose a OPA that is the correct size by measuring from the corner of the mouth to the tip of the earlobe.

Insertion

OPA / NPA

NPA

If inserting into the patient's Right nair, you may simply put it in. If inserting into the patient's Left nair, you must start with the bevel out and rotate 180 degrees while inserting.

OPA

Place the OPA into the patient's mouth with the hook up. Rotate the device 180 degrees so that it follows the natural curve of the oropharynx.

Considerations

Do not use an OPA/NPA if the patient is conscious.

Do not use if the patient has significant facial trauma

Do not use an OPA if the patient has a gag reflex
