Step 3- Carry out the plan

Step 2- Devise A Plan

Decide which strategy is the most accurate from the list of strategies you have narrowed down from the previous step. In general, all you need is care and patience given that you have the necessary skills. Persist with the plan you have chosen. If it continues not to work, discard it and choose another from your list.

There are many ways to solve a problem. First think of the possible strategies to the problem. Some of these strategies are:

  • Guess and Check
  • Make an orderly list
  • Eliminate possibilities
  • Use symmetry
  • Consider special cases
  • Use direct reasoning
  • Solve an equation

Step 4- Review/Extend

George Polya's Problem Solving Steps

Much can be gained by taking time to reflect and look back at what you have done, what worked and what didn't. Doing this will enable you to predict which strategy to use to solve future problems, if it relates to the original problem.

Step 1- Read and understand

Questions to ask yourself:

1) Do I understand all the words in the problem?

2) What am I asked to find or show?

3) Can I rephrase the problem in my own words?

4) Can I think of a picture or a diagram to help me understand the problem better?

5) Is there enough information for me to solve the problem?

6) Do I need to ask myself any questions to get the answers?

Thank you for your kind attention!
