Two-part Verbs

With Nouns

Two-part verbs are formed from a verb and another word, usually a preposition and generally have a different meaning from the verb or preposition alone.

Will to respond requests

-Please turn down the music

*OK, I'll turn it down

  • Turn down the TV
  • Turn the TV down

  • Pick up your things
  • Pick your things up

  • We use can or could

Can and Could are used differently

Request with Modals

  • Can you turn the stereo off?
  • Can is used to make basic requests from a friend or co-worker
  • Could you please take your garbage out?
  • Could is more polite than can, but has the same function
