Alex is 17 years old, born in New York City. Alex is of an Italian & Mexican descent. She is the middle child. Alex grew up with two brothers and her best friend, Harper Finkle, who often tries to keep her out of trouble. She works at their sandwich shop, Waverly Sub Station and goes to high school. She loves shopping, fashion, and art. Alex cares deeply for her family members and other close loved ones, willing to sacrifice many great things to make them happy and secure. Although sometimes she can appear to hardly ever think of anyone other than herself. Alex often uses magic to solve her problems, which ends up giving her even more problems. Alex doesn’t considers the consequences of magic often unprepared when solving situations, which requires the help of her brother Justin when she finds she can't fix them by herself. Alex is often a slacker, she does not want to do something that is school-related, she makes excuses most of the time. She also likes to trick Max into doing her work for her often. She would care less about attending her classes or being on time. Alex is usually up to no good, she works together with her younger brother Max to play tricks on Justin. She gets jealous of Justin when he moves forward in wizard training so she creates a spell song where she can remember the spells she learn to catch up with him. She is known to be very lazy, when given the option of the easy way and the proper way. She would pick the easy way every time, which gets her into trouble often. She hates reading, even menus to the point where she just points at the pictures of what she wants. As 'Daddy's little girl', she is used to getting her own way, she won't accept no as an answer when she wants something. She almost never does what she's told by her parents. When it comes to family, Alex would take advantage of them, even taking whatever she wants from them. She constantly takes things from Justin and usually never returns them. Even though Alex does manipulate her family often, she has a warm heart and helps her siblings and others.
• Alex Russo -is the main character in the series. She is the daughter of Jerry and Theresa Russo, and sister to Justin and Max Russo; she is the middle child and only daughter. As of the finale of the season, she is the Family Wizard after winning the Family Wizard Competition. She was in a long-term relationship with werewolf Mason Greyback whom she met in the third season. With spells she had the power to create copies of herself, transform objects and people into other things, stop time as long she holds on just one leg, and more.
• Justin Russo- is the eldest of the Russo kids and is a full wizard like his younger sister Alex. He's one of the most gifted wizarding students of recent times, creating his own spell, being able to use the Russo family wand with amazing success, and being well viewed by adults and professors, both mortal and magical. He was a Spells Expert and a Magic Expert.
• Max Russo- is a former wizard and the youngest of the Russo kids. Like his brother and sister, he is half Mexican from his mother, Theresa and half Italian-American from his dad, Jerry. Max used his powers the least, he was a fun wizard and sometimes uses magic irresponsibly. He lost his powers and became fully mortal in the series finale because he lost the Family Wizard Competition.
• Harper Finkle- is Alex's best friend. She was one of the three mortals who knew that wizards exist. She had an obvious crush on Justin, which was used for comedy on the show and freaked Justin out. She would get jealous of every girl that he dated/had a crush on.
Theresa Russo- is the mother of Alex, Justin, and Max Russo. She runs the Waverly Sub Station with her husband, Jerry. She had no powers, but she encouraged her children. She does not like magic, and she doesn’t like it when her children use magic a lot. She's fussy, caring, and can be pretty embarrassing.
• Jerry Russo- is Theresa's husband, and father to Justin, Alex and Max. Born a wizard and had magic powers as a child. He won the family wizard competition, but gave them to his brother, Kelbo Russo, in order to marry Theresa, a mortal. Jerry instructed his children in the proper uses of magic. He owned the Waverly Sub Station and runs the restaurant with his wife. He was stern, protective, and is constantly annoyed by his children.
Alex has successfully completed the 4 levels of Maslow's Humanistic Hierarchy of Needs. She has completed physiological, safety, love/belonging and esteem. Alex is secure and lives happily with her family. She is surrounded with people who love her and respect her. She stands in the level esteem. She has not yet achieved the level of self-actualizations because of her behavior and the difficulties she goes through when solving problems. Alex usually is in the need of help when it comes to problems. She is creative but can easily cause problems and get in trouble.
Based on the 5 features of emerging adulthood I think Alex stands in the categories of age of self-focus and the age of being in between. Alex’s personality and behaviors indicates that she cares so much about herself. She is the stage of self-discovery, where she only focuses on her personal feelings and points of view. For example, throughout her experience with magic and in high school, she was going through it without considering any of the consequences. Yet when a conflict occurs due to her irresponsibility, she frequently wasn’t able to handle it alone. Also, the act of taking advantage of her family, and taking whatever she wants from them. She wants things to go her way and won’t accept reality. This indicates that she is still going through the stage of a typical teenager who is trying to fully figure herself through life experiences. A teenager who is in the need of help sometimes, she is not fully developed to be in the stage of adulthood but in between. I think she is also in the stage of the age in between because she knows what she wants and knows what she does but she isn’t fully an adult that would be able to handle their own problems. In addition to that, I think Alex falls under the category of foreclosure only because she continued on through the practice of magic from her family.
Alex’s personality falls under most of the category Freud’s defense mechanisms. Alex demonstrated regression sometimes. For example, she almost never does what she's told by her parents. She won't accept no as an answer when she wants something. She acts immature and childish sometimes. Alex also demonstrated denial because she would lie or come up with excuses to try to deny her mistakes. She also demonstrated rationalization when she once broke her mom’s favorite cup and blamed it on max. She tries to avoid problems by lying, and blaming, which cause her so much trouble.
Wizard of Waverly Place is an American fantasy teen sitcom which ran from October 12, 2007 to January 6, 2012 on Disney Channel. The series was created by Todd J. Greenwald. It briefly shows the adventures of the Russo Family. The Three siblings who came from a long line of wizards get into all sorts of crazy situations as they grow up facing typical teen challenges like school, friends, family and including magic. Alex Russo and her brothers Justin and Max must master their newly learned powers or lose them forever. Their dad, Jerry, gave up his powers when he married their mortal mom. The family business is Waverly Sub Station in busy Manhattan, and the siblings at the end compete for who would be the family wizard.
Out of the 5 big traits, Alex‘s personality displays the high level of extraversion; due to her sociability, talkativeness, and interactions with others. She is always engaged and could sometimes cause chaos. She is warm and friendly but usually engages in risk. This makes her also, fall under the low level of conscientiousness because she is a big risk taker, she can be impulsive. She doesn’t consider any consequences when doing anything. She lacks the traits of thoughtfulness, impulse control, and isn’t mindful of details. This is because she dislikes school and reading. She uses magic irresponsibly and takes risks when using it.
