PROTEUS SYNDROME

Named after Greek sea god, Proteus, who would change his shape to keep from getting caught

first identified by Michael Cohen Jr. in 1979

named by German pediatrician, Rudolf Weidemann in 1983

known to carry a germline mutation of

the tumour suppressor gene PTEN, on chromosome ten

blood clots lodgred in lungs that could prove fatal

overgrowth of multiple tissues, and bones

People with Proteus Syndrome

There are very few people with Proteus syndrome, the most famous is Joseph Merrick also known as, The Elephant Man

Facts

There is no cure for proteus syndrome, they can do surgery to get rid of harmful tumors but they raise the risk of death with every surgery performed

life expectancy varies with the severity of the case

Affects more males than females

can affect any race or nationality

often mistaken for elaphantiasis

Elephantiasis: Lymphatic obstruction which causes severe swelling in the legs and groin area. It is usually caused by infection with a parasitic worm which is transmitted by mosquito bites.
