Protons

Protons were next to be discovered and eventually it was determined that they were clustered at the center of the atom in the nucleus.

State Standards

Neutrons

Ernest Rutherford

The thrid and final subatomic particle is the neutron. They also are found in the nucleus of the atom.

Electrons

Electrons are the smallest sub atomic particle. They were also the first particle to be discovered.

James Chadwick

Keystone Anchors- Chemistry

CHEM.A.2.1 - Explain how atomic theory serves as the basis for the study of matter.

CHEM.A.2.1.1 - Describe the evolution of atomic theory leading to the current model of the atom based on the works of Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, and Bohr.

CHEM.A.2.2 - Describe the behavior of electrons in atoms

Pennsylvania State Science Assessment Anchor

S11.C.1.1.1 - 1. Explain that matter is made of particles called atoms and that atoms are composed of even smaller particles (e.g., proton, neutrons, electrons).

J.J. Thomson

Atomic Structure

The Nucleus

Students will use this presentation to gain background knowledge for understanding chemical behavior. The discovery of and subsequent description of the atom and its sub-particles is very important to the development of more complex chemical concepts. This multimedia presentation can be used as an instructional aide or as a student center. It could also be used to provide support for IEP students or students that were absent for the lesson. The presentation is a very visual and audio based interpretation of the material and it will be best suited to help students with strengths in those areas.

The nucleus is the center of the atom and houses both the protons and neutrons, its discovery was a major breakthrough in determining atomic structure.

Dalton's Atomic Theory

In 1808, Dalton's Atomic Theory explained the nature of materials.

You are listening to Sylvia T. Ceyer lecture on Dalton's Atomic Theory, recorded by Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

John Dalton

Jennifer Neiman EDIM 508

Electron Location

Once the nucleus was identified the only part of the atom left to describe was where the electrons were in respect to the other parts.

Summary

A music video to summarize what you have learned.
