Volleyball self-analysis

What is a Bump?

A bump is hitting or passing the ball to the other team or to a teammate using the upper forearm also known as forearm pass, dip or bump

Importance of Skill

In volleyball a team can touch the ball 3 times, usually in the sequence of a bump, a set, and a hit or spike. Having a good bump is important so that the setter can set the ball to the other team or to the person that will hit or spike.

Muscles used to perform bump

  • Deltoids
  • Biceps
  • Triceps
  • Gluteus Maximus
  • Quadriceps
  • Hamstring
  • Gastrocnemius
  • Abdominal
  • Oblique

Due to the lack of balance stability, one of my knees was extended and the other was far behind and flexed.

Low center of gravity

WHAT CAN I IMPROVE ON

A big problem that I had when executing the bump was that my knees were not flexed. My knees were fully extended rather than flexed. Because of that I was not able to generate power from my lower body therefore creating the power from a swing .

How can I improve?

I was never in ready position therefore when the ball came I wasn't ready to hit it and I made me move back. I need to keep my knees apart from each other and not just put them behind the other. If I had put my knees apart from each other and flexed them my base of support would have been wider and my center of gravity would have been lower.

Fully extended knees

Arms stay joint

flexed knees

The follow though is when the player has just bumped the ball. They should have their knees slightly extended, while making sure that the player is still balanced arms and elbows still locked.

No swinging of arms

When the preparation phase the player is getting ready to bump the ball. This persons hands are in a straight platform and her knees are flexed which gives them. a low center of gravity. This is the ideal because due to the flexed knees the player can control their bump. They should also be watching the ball so that they know where the ball will go when they bump the ball.

Knees apart

Overall my bump was not a very good one. I have lots of work to be done and lots of areas where improvement can be achieved. My biggest area where improvement is needed is the preparation. Since the preparation leads to the execution and follow though everything that I do is important. Next time I will remember to give myself a wide base of support and flex my knees, then I know that my bump will be better and my execution and follow though phase will also be improved.

The execution phase is when the player actually bumps the ball. The player needs to make sure that they are receiving the ball in front of their body and needs to have slightly extended knees for a higher center of gravity and to transfer weight from their lower body to prevent a swing. This is the ideal way of executing the bumping because the player has full control of where the ball will go.
