The Revolutionary War
By: Bella Sung
American diplomat Benjamin Franklin at the French court.
How did the war start?
The colonial people in America were not very happy with the way they were living. They worked very hard and felt robbed by the British. The people wanted their own country and wanted to be free of unreasonable taxes. They started to stop paying the government all together. When this happened Britain started to send armies to America to see that people were not opposing the government and that they were paying their taxes. Some people felt very upset and started to oppose England's government. This led to the first formal attack in 1775.
Around the middle of the 1700s, on the East Coast of North America were Britain's colonies. They were well off. Even though England was a thousand miles away, the link between them was still strong. Most "Americans" did not consider themselves Americans. They were known by their specific colony. Through the Revolutionary War, the thirteen colonies were changed. They were converted into a new nation that would prosper in the near future.
The Treaty of Paris
Conclusion
France joins the war
As the war was coming to a close, England was starting to change its attitude towards it. All the talks was starting to be about peace. In April 1782 England commanded its troops to leave New York, Savannah, and Charleston. Also, in April 1782 was the starting point for peace talks.
The talks between America's chief diplomats, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Henry Laurens, John Jay and Britain's Oswald and David Hartley lasted for more than one year. The overall conclusion was that on September 3, 1783 The Treaty of Paris was signed. This was identified as the official end to the war and recognized the United States of America as a free and independent nation in its own right.
In the midst of war England feared that France , her old rival would enter the war. The peace treaty signed by both countries in 1763 had pushed France out of North America. France had vengeance towards Britain.
As early as 1775 when the war began, the Patriotic diplomat, Benjamin Franklin traveled to France and asked the French for help. At first, they were hesitant to get involved in another war with England. Nonetheless, France agreed. They would send clothes, money, weapons, and gunpowder in secret.
