The use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from there literal sense.

An allegory is a story where the author

wants you to interpret the plot or the

characters actions a certain way.

  • Relates to a representation where one thing stands for another

examples:

One example is The Animal Farm. In this case

the author, George Orwell, wants you to interpret

the animals actions and the plot like the Russian

Revolution.

  • Symbolism and allegory add a depth of meaning and interpretation to a poem.
  • The dove is a symbol for peace
  • The color red stands for love
  • Black represents death or evil
  • A broken mirror represents separation

Other examples:

Faerie Queen by Edmund Spense

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Examples from The Crucible:

  • The forest is a symbol for evil
  • Poppet is a symbol for witchcraft.
