Turnabout

Margaret Peterson Haddix

Plot of Turnabout by Margaret Peterson Haddix

By Katie Clack

It's Amelia's 100th birthday (101th aged) and she soon realizes that her memories of being 100 are gone. The residents realize that as they grow younger, their previous memories are disappearing.

By this time Amelia is sixteen and Anny Beth is eighteen and they become increasingly anxious that they will soon be infants, unable to live on their own. Amelia searches for an adopting family.

While sheltering in a cave on a nature preserve away from the world, Amelia finds her old home. She wants to stay there but quickly realizes someone lives there: AJ. She later finds out that A.J (Annabeth J'amelia Hazlewood) is a descendant of both of them.

Amelia is in a nursing home, ready to die. When she is offered a chance to be young again she signs the document with very little alertness as to what it is.

A.J, a reporter which is a despised career that could expose the project, calls Amelia constantly wanting to know more about Amelia's family history. Afraid of being exposed, they pack everything and flee to where they grew up, Kentucky: where they can live in secrecy.

Amelia finds out that she and 49 other nursing home members agreed to participate in an experiment named Project Turnabout and were given PT-1, the injection reversing the aging process.

Amelia and Anny Beth decide to reveal their story to A.J for the sake of their lives. A.J eventually agrees to care for their well-being as the unage into childhood.

One man doesn't want to lose his memories anymore so he receives the cure, an injection halting the unaging process. After he receives it, he dies; scaring the others. While the doctors continue to find a way to make the Cure work on humans with little success, Amelia and a friend, Anny Beth, decide to leave the nursing home and live their lives together.
