symptoms
Some of the most marked features of this disease appear in the skull and face. As the skull thickens, the facial features can distort, and the patient’s face may become rounded and elongated. Within the skull, the series of holes known as foramina which provide openings for nerves, blood vessels, and ligaments begin to narrow. Initially this may cause problems like recurrent sinus infections because of poor drainage.
Lionitis
what is it?
lionitis is a disease that effects unborn babies, and there are only a number of people that have the disease, but only live a short life.
Craniodiaphyseal dysplasia or know as lionits is an extremely rare disease recessive bone disorder that causes calcium to build up in the skull, disfiguring the facial features and reducing life expectancy.
case studies
Craniodiaphyseal dysplasia is an unusual genetic disorder in which calcium builds up excessively in the bones, causing extreme thickening and hardness. It is progressive, and typically becomes fatal in childhood because it interferes so severely with neurological function. Treatment options are available to manage craniodiaphyseal dysplasia, including surgery and medications to improve quality of life. Also known as lionitis, the condition appears to be recessive, and very few cases have been described, which makes determining genetic links difficult.
Rocky Dennis was born December 4, 1961 in Glendora, California, to Florence "Rusty" Tullis and Roy Dennis. At the age of 4, Dennis was diagnosed with craniodiaphyseal dysplasia, also known as CDD or lionitis, an extremely rare disease occurring in approximately 1 in every 22 million births, with fewer than 20 recorded cases. CDD is a bone disorder that causes calcium to build up in the skull, disfiguring the facial features and reducing life expectancy.
Doctors informed his mother that the abnormal calcium deposits in his skull would push his eyes toward the edges of his head, twist his nose out of shape, cause his eyesight and hearing to fail and, if the handful of cases on record were any indication, result in tremendous pressure that would destroy his brain before he was seven.
