He was the first to find Andy. He had stopped to talk to him but because he was drunk nothing sensible came from him. At one point the man threatened to call the cops because Andy was "drinking" (which he had not) and as Andy made an attempt to nod his head the man took it that he was shaking his head and said: "You don' wanna cop to fin' you all drunk an wet in a alley, huh? Okay, buddy. This time you get off easy."
Andy; a boy part of a gang called the "Royals." During a night at a dance Andy had left his beloved Laura to buy a pack of cigarettes. He went to a candy store only to find it closed. As he was heading to a place called "Alfredo's" he got ambushed. A knife cut a deep wound under his ribcage and he was left there to rot in the rain. Later the reader finds the group who ambushed him was an enemy of the Royals called the "Guardians." Four people pass by him before his beloved finds him and calls the cops. A drunk man, a couple, and an old woman scavenging for stuff in garbage cans. The problem is not a single one of them stopped to help him...
A couple pass by the alley and stop very close to it. Andy needed to get their attention so he tried to yell but the only sound that escaped his mouth was a whimper. They heard and went into the alley to check what the sound was and there they find Andy. The girl (Angela) wants to leave but the boy (Freddie) wants to help until he sees Andy's purple silk jacket that had "Royals." not wanting to get involved in the conflict between the two gangs they leave.
Irony in this story; one of which was "It was 11:13 p.m. but he did not know the time.""Even in his pain, there had been some sort of pride in knowing he was a Royal. Now there was no pride at all."
Personification in this story; "The garbage cans were stacked there, beating noisily in the rain.""The knife hated only the purple jacket.""He did not know why his voice had deserted him..."
The old women was a scavenger, though she was filled with pride. This was apparent in the way she walking and how quickly she went in and out of the alley. She barely noticed Andy and just as quickly as she came she left, as well as all Andy's hopes of being saved.
Andy realizes that the only reason he wasn't saved was because of the jacket. The only reason he was stabbed in the first place was because of his jacket. He carefully took it off in an attempt to save himself but it was too late, by the time Laura found him and called the police he was dead. When the policeman saw the purple silk jacket beside Andy's cold corpse he said: "A Royal, huh?" Even though Andy wanted to die as "Andy", the policeman still called him a Royal, so in a sense Andy still died a Royal.
The story in a third person limited point of view, because although it focuses on Andy's thoughts not once did the story say I.
It relates to real life in every way possible. We make decisions everyday and those decisions can affect everything. It affects anything from the flowers in your garden to the fish in the ocean; according to Newton's law, "Everything as an equal and opposite reaction."
The purple silk jacket that Andy owned was a very important symbol. It symbolized Andy's pride and decisions. In the end it was removing the jacket that made Andy "Andy."
From my understanding, the theme in this story is that the choices and decisions you make can drastically affect your life. If he had chosen not to be part of a gang he would not have been stabbed. But this is not only about Andy, it's also about the four people how passed by him. For example, the couple that passed by him had a chance to save him, yet, they were too afraid to become involved in the quarrel between the two gangs (Guardians and Royals). Because of their cowardice Andy had died.
