Moist Gangrene

It may develop after a severe burn, frostbite or injury. It often occurs in people with diabetes who unknowingly injure a toe or foot. Wet gangrene needs to be treated immediately because it spreads quickly and can be fatal.

  • Continuous pressure on blood vessel or nerve.
  • Low blood supply
  • Lack of immunity.
  • Obstruction due to emboli or thrombosis in blood vessel.

Development of wet gangrene : occur in diabetes

Necrotic tissue with putrefaction with saprophytic bacteria. It results from a reduction in the supply of oxygen-carrying blood to the affected region, Wet gangrene often produces an fluid or pus so called (wet).

Gangrene is referred to as "wet" if there's a bacterial infection in the affected

tissue. Swelling, blistering and a wet

appearance are common features of

wet gangrene.

  • Scarification : process of making a number of scratches in damaged tissue to allow substance to penetrate body.
  • Blood thinners : to prevent blood from clotting to reduce chances of blocking blood vessel.
  • Debridement : cut dead tissue away to prevent gangrene spreading.
  • Potent antibiotics through IV.

Aim of treatment

Symptoms

  • Affected area is swollen.
  • Severe pain.
  • Foul smelling odor.
  • Becomes black ( due to RBCs break and iron liberated interact with H2S elaborated from dead tissue lead to formation FeS ).
  • Person may suffer from a fever.
  • No line of demarcation.
  • Prevent gangrene spreading , and its effect (e.g. Toxemia, bacteremia).
  • As we can't reverse damage caused by gangrene.
