  • Saladin decided to take back Jerusalem
  • Wanted to either offer a truce or eliminate the enemy
  • Moved quickly to fight the weakened Christian armies
  • Raised in Sunni, military family
  • Rose to power in Muslim society
  • Became adviser to caliph
  • Killed the Shiite Caliph
  • Saladin was uninterested in the financial value of Egypt
  • Was focused on the reconquest of crusader states
  • He spent a lot of time fighting other rival muslim
  • Took control of cities like Damascus, Mosul, and Aleppo
  • Established family members to

  • Was willing to make a truce with the crusaders
  • Wanted to save his troops to fend off other rival muslims at the time
  • Had trouble with a crusader from France called Reginald of Châtillon
  • Conflicted with his plan for a truce
  • Was a mere annoyance to Saladin
  • Richard the Lion heart demolishes most of the muslim defenders in Acre
  • Saladin stay behind in Jerusalem to guard it
  • He strategically avoids major battle and keeps Jerusalem, Palestine and Syria under Muslim control
  • This leaves the Muslims as the victors of the 3rd Crusade
  • After the 3rd Crusade Saladin returns home but dies from a fever on March the 4th, 1193
  • He dies right after Richard the Lion Heart return home
  • Saladin is known as a great foil to many crusaders back then but also as a generous and religious man, respected by many
