Despite gaining agency the people of Haiti still struggle today. Regardless of this Haiti is history’s greatest example of people working together to resist oppression.

Think about all the levels and systems of oppression we have learned about. Which of these would be best resisted by using an effective social movement?

Haiti became the first colony in the world to successfully resist their oppressors and gain their independence. France never returned to try and retake the land.

The revolution in France allowed the slaves in Haiti to join a larger Social Movement. This is the story of how slaves resisted oppression and gained agency.

The rulers of France were oppressing their own people, however. The poor people of France made a revolutionary change to gain agency for themselves.

"Tear up the roads with shot; throw corpses and horses into all the fountains; burn and annihilate everything, in order that those who have come to reduce us to slavery may have before their eyes the image of that hell which they deserve.”

A Social Movement is when groups of people work together to resist an oppression to gain agency.

Both of the examples of types of resistance we saw have something in common: People worked together to try to stop an oppression.

For almost 200 years the slaves suffered terrible oppressions. On many occasions slaves tried to resist, but their resistance gained no agency.

The land now known as Haiti was a French colony that made its money by using slaves kidnapped from Africa to farm coffee and sugar.

Both types of resistance can be effective, but they can also fail to gain agency as they were meant to.

Let’s use an example to show how all these ideas connect. This is the story of The Haitian Revolution.
