What does it mean to be color blind?
- Does NOT mean: the world is in black and white
- Actually means: having a hard time seeing certain shades of color
Statistics on Color Blindness
>
In the US
- 8% men
- 0.5% women
- About 3 million people affected
- 99% suffer from red and green color blindness
- Complete color blindness is very rare
Causes for Color Blindness
- Mainly caused by mutations in certain genes: OPN1LW, OPN1MW, and OPN1SW
- lack of cones (color vision) or production of abnormal opsin pigments
- Acquired color vision deficiency: eye disease, exposure to chemicals, or side effect of a drug
- Many different types of tests
- Ishihara Color Test
- Cambridge Color Test (taken on computer)
- HRR Pseudoisochromatic Color Test (another red green color blindness test)
- Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test

Inherited Color Blindness
- X chromosome linked recessive trait (seen mainly in red and green color deficiency)
- X chromosome hold genes that make pigment in cone (to discriminate color)
- Ex:Mother carries the mutated gene in x chromosome passes to some children
What's Happening Today
- There is currently no cure
- Color correcting glasses
- EnChroma (red and green color blindness)
- Computer software and apps
- Color Blind Pal and ColorBlind Helper
- National Eye Institute
- gene therapy with monkeys: injected virus with red photopigment gene (squirrel monkey)
- cause recognition of the color red
- gene delivery+neurotrophic factors(molecules that help growth of nerve cells)
