Hidalgo was an overo as well

94% of all lethal white carriers are "fame overo" - a coat pattern with in a coat pattern.

That's me!

Overo:

Meet Cinder, my Chestnut overo mare.

.

One of three coat pattern among paint horses:

The white usually will not cross the back of the horse between its withers and its tail.

Generally, at least one and often all four legs are dark.

Generally, the white is irregular, and is rather scattered or splashy.

Head markings are distinctive, often bald-faced, apron-faced or bonnet-faced.

An overo may be either predominantly dark or white.

The tail is usually one color

So what the heck does all that mean?

Maybe a quick equine vocab lesson will be helpful:

Other helpful Terms:

What is O.L.W.S?

Overo lethal white syndrome, or simply "lethal white," as it is commonly referred to, is a recessive condition among foals of only overo lineage. Foals are born unusually white with blue eyes, hence the name "lethal white." Though what makes the genetic disease deadly is the inability to pass feces, causing colic and death with in a few days of birth, always.

Mare: mature female horse.

Stallion: mature male horse that has not been gelded (castrated.)

Foal: a baby horse.

Colic: Any abnormal stomach pain in horses.

Many horses bite their

stomach when colicing

So what happens?

Just So you Know:

Having a white coat and blue eyes is not unhealthy or abnormal in most situations. Lethal white foals are born white or almost white when their wellspring are often not, making them abnormally white. All lethal white foals are white, but otherwise white is a normal coat color.

When two parents carry the lethal white gene, there is high possibility of the foal being born abnormally white are almost white, blue eyes and the inability to defecate. Resulting in a type of colic called "impaction" and death with in days of birth. This is a recessive trait and the result of an abnormality deep in side the DNA.

So how does this happen?

The answer lies deep in equine DNA:

- The genetic mutation is found mainly American Paint horses where white spotting is desired and the Overo coat pattern is most commonly found.

- The Mutation in the endothelin receptor B gene results in an amino acid substitution of isoleucine to lysine.

- during the development of the within the neural crest, migration of melanocytes and of precursors of intestinal ganglia is disrupted

- causing both the abnormally white and the inability to pass feces.
