Erikson's 8 stages of development

Stage One

Infancy ( Ages 0-1)

Trust vs. Mistrust

Trusting mother and environment will create secure attachment

Stage 2

Early Childhood (Ages 2-3)

Autonomy vs. Shame & Doubt

Develop abilities to make decisions and the self-control to exercise choice.

Stage 3

Preschool Years (Ages 4-5)

Initiative Vs. Guilt

In this stage the child learns how to plan and become active.

Stage 4

Grammar School years (ages 6-12

Industry Vs. Inferiority

In this stage the child is eager to learn new skills and tasks and becomes very productive

Stage 5

Adolescence (Age 13-18)

Identity vs. Role diffusion

In this stage the adolescent teen connects skills and social roles to form career objectives.

Stage 6

Young Adulthood (ages 19-30)

Intimacy Vs. Isolation

In this stage the young adult will begin commiting themselves to another person.

Stage 7

Middle Adulthood

Generativity vs. Stagnation

In this stage the adult begins the "mid-life crisis" and needs to be needed. This also allow the adult to guide and encourage the younger generations.

Stage 8

Late Adulthood

Integrity vs. Despair

In this stage a senior citizen will have to accept the timing and placement of one's own life cycle.
