The Story of The Python of Delphi and Apollo

Family History

When Leto was pregnant, with Apollo and Artemis, Hera, the wife of Zeus, got very jealous and angry. She sent out the Python of Delphi to make sure the Leto wouldn't be able to rest and give birth. Eventually she was able to give birth on the island of Delos. When Apollo was only four days old he was very strong and brave. He was given a silver bow with golden arrows from the blacksmith, Hephaestus. Apollo went to the pythons cave, in the mountains of Parnassus, to slay him, and when the python went to attack, Apollo stabbed it in the forehead with one of his arrows.

Apollo was so filled with joy he started playing his song of victory on his lyre. This is the moment when he became the god of music. After he was done playing he took the python and buried it under the slope of the mountains. Above his grave Apollo built the oracle of Delphi, which is also known as the "Pythia".

When he returned from his battle he hosted the Pythian games and music competitions in Delphi. From then on the games were held every four years in his honor..
