In the Roman Republic, consuls serve for a one year term. After the term is up, the individuals can not serve for another ten years. But in the U.S government, the president serves for a four year term.
Roman consuls consisted of two head people. One of the two people were considered the president and the other was considered the co-president. The co-president was the commander of the army. In the U.S, there is also a president. But, the co-president would be the same as the vice president.
In the U.S and in the Roman Republic, both lead executives have the power to veto. Veto means to refuse to approve proposals of government.
In the Roman Republic, senators had to serve for life. But in the U.S Government, senators only served for a six year term.
Both the U.S and Roman Repulic had the same symbol to represent that they were a republic. This symbol was an eagle.
Executive Branch
The Roman Rupublic and United States Republic both have three divisons of power.
Consuls: People elected by an assembly, consuls rule as executives for a time period of one year. Consuls control the military in both the United State and Roman government. Consuls in Rome are the same as presidents in the United States.
A group of citizen soldiers that are members for life. They elect consuls and make laws.
Both societies contain written laws. In Rome, the written laws are known as the 12 tables. In the U.S, the written laws are known as the Bill of Rights.
Senate:
Three hundred people rule as senators. These people are chosen by aristocrats and they elected to govern Rome. The U.S government also has senate. The U.S has a senate of one hundred people, two people for each state.
Praetors: Eight judges chosen by the centuriate assembly to be a judge for a year. Two of the eight judges supervise civil court and criminal court.
Centuriate Assembly:
A group of citizen soldiers that are members for life. They elect consuls and make laws.
Tribal Assembly:
Citizens that are put into groups depending on where they live. Members of this assembly are also members for life. Tribal Assembly members elect Tribunes. Tribunes are Officals of Rine affected by Plebians to represent them. They elect one consul.
