Why is fishing so hard to control?

Season #2!

  • If you catch NO fish you “starve” & are out of the game (= lose 10 personal points).
  • Person with the most fish wins
  • Go fishing!
  • Record data.

Season #6

  • Continue like the previous round
  • Final round

Results

THE TRAGEDY OF THE COMMONS

  • Record Data.
  • How many fish did each boat catch?
  • How many fish remain in the ocean?
  • Are there bycatch? (tally each)

  • Reproduction = for every fish left in the bowl after a “season” add another.
  • Where else do we see a Tragedy of the Commons?

  • What are some possible solutions to this problem?

Season #3!

  • Remember… the person with the most fish in the end wins
  • Go fishing!
  • Record data.

Discussion Points

  • How many “real world” rounds will this go?
  • Who was the best fisherman in the class?
  • Which group had the lowest total number of fish available to catch throughout the six seasons? Why?
  • Which group had the highest total number of fish available to catch throughout the six seasons? Why?

Season #5!

  • Have any of you made “international treaties,” yet?
  • Have you tried to create your own “fishery”
  • these are the fish that you don’t eat, but you cultivate and allow them to reproduce (colors represent various species).
  • Go fishing!
  • Record data.

Fishing Instructions

  • Four of Five Students per Group
  • Record Sheet
  • Bowl = ocean; Cup = boat; Skittles = fish
  • Carrying capacity (k) of fish = 24;
  • Max. capacity of fish = 30
  • One “fishing session” = generation of fish
  • (= 20 seconds)
  • Straw = fishing pole (no hands!)
  • Catch as many as you can in 20 seconds.

Practice: Farmed fish can benefit many people worldwide, as long as the farmed fish are fed sustainable products. By producing 250 million metric tons of farmed fish in 2011, Japan is the leader in fish farming. Japan's fish farming market has grown at a rate of 2% per year. At this rate, in what year will Japan produce 2 billion metric tons of farmed fish per year?

Season #4!

  • Add 8 large Whoppers (whales)
  • k = 4; max capacity = 8
  • Go fishing!
  • Record Data
