Segregation Through White Picket Fences

A Dream Deferred Langston Hughes

Homestead Grays

This picture illustrates that African Americans were not desired to participate on the same baseball league as whites were. In fact, they had to make their own leagues, termed "Negro Leagues."

Background Information

A Dream Deferred ponders the nature of dreams unfulfilled. The intensely vivid imagery such as a "raisin in the sun" and the stench of raw meat aptly describe in an inquisitive manner the possibilities of the enduring sensation of failure. The sensation that unfairly looms over African (or Black) American people who never got a chance to fulfill their dreams.

The Harlem Renaissance was a movement that spanned the 1920s and was also known as the "New Negro Movement".

This illustrates the widespread struggle that African Americans had to face during this time. They could not even attend the same schools as the white kids did, who were getting a better education than they did.

This poem compares the hardships of African/Black Americans during the twenties to the ideal pristine nature of a crystal stair. Instead of stepping up and up and achieving on a fanciful escalation Blacks have been forced down the decline. The path they've been forced down is harrowing and tragic full of splinters and sorrows.

However, there were efforts to integrate African Americans into society. This is an obvious example of that.
