Branches Of Australian Government

Links and similarities

Seperation of powers:

The seperation of the institutions of government into 3 seperate Governing Branches. The Executive, The Legislative and the Judiciary.

Checks and balances:

The checks and balances assure accountability of seperation of Powers.

For example, In australia the High Court hears matters to dow with corruption in the legislative sysytem.

  • Executive and Legislative are quite closely linked because In australia the prime minister and all government ministers are all also members of parliment/senators.
  • The Judiciary and legislative are quite seperated but are linked by the attorney general and soliciter general.
  • The attorney general is the highest officer of the law and represents the crown, They are suggested by the Prime Minister and approved by the Govoner General.
  • The soliciter general is the second highest officer of the law and is responsible to represent the governments Intrests in the High Court.They are appointed by the Atorney general.
  • The executive and Judiciary are also not very linked but slighly connected because the Prime minister can suggest a high court justice and the govenor general appoints them.

  • The houses are known as the house of representatives and the senate .
  • The houses have the power to make and pass laws and the govenor general must approve them.
  • Both houses must agree on any legistaltion.

Judicial

  • Judicial power is the power of the Australia Legal system. The judicial system has the power to Interpirt the Law and constitution and put it into practise.
  • The Judicial stystem is controlled on two levels, State and federal.
  • The Federal system's top court is the High Court in Canberra and there is also a Federal court in each state.
  • The top court in each state is the supreme court.
  • The High court and federal court are responsible for Interpriting the Constitution.
  • State courts such as the Supreme court are responsible for Interpriting the law in Individual cases.
