  • The Pinta was captained by Martin Alonso Pinzon and was about 70 tons.
  • Pinta was a caravel which means it did not have as much carrying space as the Santa Maria but it could explore shallower bays and mouths of rivers, unlike the Santa Maria.
  • The Pinta had about 26 men on board.
  • its length was about 17 meters, keel length 13 meters, beam length 5 meters and depth about 2 meters.
  • The Niña was the smallest of the 3 ships.
  • Captained by Vincente Anes Pinzon, brother of Martin who captained the Pinta.
  • The Niña was about 50 or 60 tons
  • The Niña held about 24 men
  • The Niña was also a caravel, like The Pinta.

Christopher Columbus’ First Voyage

* The first voyage started in August 3, 1492 and ended in March 1493.

* The three ships that traveled were the Pinta, the Nina and the Santa Maria.

* On those three ships there were 88 crew men.

* Columbus had total control of the three ships, but the captain of the Pinta was Martin Alonso Pinzon and the captain of the Nina was Vicente Yanez Pinzon.

* He was able to take this journey to the new world because the King and Queen of Spain agreed to fund the trip.

* His first stop on the trip were the Canary Islands to stock up on supplies and make any repairs he needed to on the boats.

-He was stuck there for about two weeks because of wind.

* Columbus’ main method of navigation was by Dead Reckoning (plotting course and distance travelled to figure out the position of the boat).

* On October 7, 1492 there was record of birds flying.

* On October 12, 1492 at around 2 AM a sailor on the Pinta named Rodrigo de Triana spotted land.

* San Salvador was the name that Columbus called it; Guanahani by the natives.

* Columbus also traveled to Cuba.

-While in Cuba, the captain of the Pinta, took it without permission to an island called “Babeque” to look for gold.

* On Christmas of 1492, the Santa Maria ran aground and had to be left behind.

* In January of 1493, Columbus was headed to the coast of Hispaniola and saw the Pinta there.

* While on the trip back to Spain he ran into many different storms, and did not make it back until March 15, 1493.
