  • having been through a depression and several wars, parents wanted more for their children

Rock N' Roll

  • before the 50s, teens listened to the same music as their parents
  • teens listened to rock n' roll artists such as Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and Buddy Holly
  • adults believed that rock n' roll inspired rebelious behavior

  • adults disapproved of the new lifestyle of teens
  • rules constricted the new found lives of teens
  • dance was their only freedom
  • "juvenile delinquency" was considered chewing gum in class or talking back to parents

Rise of Teens

  • the word teenager was created in the 50s because of the increase in population of young people between 13 and 18
  • before the 50s, a person under 18 was considered a child, and when one turned 18, they were considered an adult
  • teenagers gained more independence and freedoms

  • before WWII, teenage boys were expected to get a job or enlist and teenage girls were expected to learn how to be a wife and mother
  • television and AM radio were tailored to appeal to teens
  • teens were interested in sockhops, dance fads, clothing trends, new hairstyles, bowling allies, soda shops, and drive-ins

The New Consumer

  • teens were a whole new population of consumers
  • teens had more money to spend, and they spent it freely
  • businesses started appealing more to teens because they knew teens were an important market
