Attendance and Punctuality

Attendance

Our current target for attendance is 96%.

Our pupil questionnaires from last year demonstrate that the pupils themselves recognise the need for good attendance.

We appreciate that children are ill from time to time. We don’t ask you to send them to school if they are unable to attend due to illness. If your child is ill, please contact the school by 9am on every day of illness.

However, we do ask that you do not take holidays in term time.

We also request that you make routine dental and medical appointments after school or in the school holidays. Children whose attendance causes concern will be referred to the EWO (Education Welfare Officer).

Financial Penalty Notices (£60 per child) may be issued if children miss 10 days (not consecutive) without reason for their absence

Punctuality

When children arrive in school, they go straight into their learning.

They have their reading session at the start of the day so regular lateness could have a negative impact on their progress.

The bell is rung at 9am. If your child arrives after this time, you will need to take them into school via the main entrance where they will need to be signed in. Mrs Burt will monitor punctuality and the EWO will be informed of persistent late attenders.

How to support your child at home:

- High frequency words

- Big Maths Learn-its

- Number bonds, doubles etc.

- Daily reading at home

Not forgetting, real-life experiences.

Resources can be found on our website.

We are becoming a paperless school and we are trying to send all letters via email, if possible.

Keep looking at the year pages – included are photos of our activities and events, our mid-term plan and any other news.

Real life activities

Encourage your child's independence, and introduce them to real life learning opportunities.

Forest Schools

Messy Monday

Sessions are designed around children's natural interests. Many children are enthusiastic about learning in the outdoor environment as it ignites their imagination and creativity.

All children in Reception will get an equal opportunity to engage in Forest School with Mr Warwick.

In order to be ethical citizens of the community, children need to be able to solve problems and take responsible risks.

The children go out in all weather and are provided with suitable wet weather gear.

The purpose of Messy Monday is to engage children through creative, physical and risk taking activities that develop their knowledge and understanding of the world, whilst also developing their physical and fine motor skills. Best of all - it's a lot of fun!

Our Learning Environment

COOL Challenges

COOL Choose Our Own Learning.

Children are given the opportunity to consolidate prior learning by accessing independent activities.

Children lead their learning

through Pupil Voice.

This year, we will continue to use natural displays and resources through the school to create a supportive and engaging learning environment for all learners.

How we engage our children in Numeracy

How we engage our children in Literacy

Big Maths scheme - Daily ACLIC sessions - These sessions focus upon encouraging your child to become fully numerate.

We participate in small group focused activities where children learn new skills. The can consolidate these skills through COOL challenges and continuous and enhanced provision around the classrooms/

Again, we use real-life situations (money, time, use of mathematical language etc).

Mathematical reasoning - Through developing reasoning skills it encourages children to solve real-life problems.

Letters and Sounds/Jolly Phonics - We follow the Letters and Sounds scheme to introduce the sounds to the children. We use songs and actions from Jolly Phonics to support the children with their sound recognition.

Reading - In Reception, when reading, we use a PM reading

scheme. This uses colour banded reading books which are

individually matched to your child's reading age and can be

used to support their comprehension. This scheme encourages

reading skills e.g. touching words, using pictures, repetitive language, etc.

Information regarding reading will be sent home with your child.

Writing - As a school we use cursive formation.

In Reception we introduce pre-cursive skills to the children - examples of this formation can be found on our website.

We engage our children with as many real and

hands-on experiences as possible in order for them to

develop their vocabulary and to become a creative writer.

How we engage our children in Digital Competency

The Donaldson Report

“Pupils fully engage with digital tools being able to apply their ICT skills successfully across the curriculum. Pupils digital work sitting alongside written work, linked via QR codes etc”.

Coding: we have remote control cars, Bee-Bots, Blue-Bots, Hwb and Prowise Presenter.

Hwb is fantastic for coding, writing and making graphs.

Children will receive their own Hwb log ins so they can access things

Chromebooks for mouse control and typing.

Teach your monsters to read/Bug Club - great for phonics, interactive activities and reading.

Topmarks - very popular with the children, interactive games for Numeracy and Literacy.

QR codes - these can be found in the children's work books linking to a video of them or they can be used for hunts and displays and much more!

Seesaw - Children use it to record their independent and practical work to share with their families at home.

We also have recordable microphones and pegs, mobile phones,

metal detectors and recordable clipboards.

The curriculum in Wales is changing and by 2021, Wales

will be following the ‘Successful Futures’ curriculum as

set out by Professor Donaldson.

It is taking on more Foundation Phase principles across

the whole of Primary and Secondary education.

Four core purposes are: Capable Learners, Ethical Citizens,

Creative Contributors and Healthy Individuals.

Our School Vision

Exploring together, learning forever.

Mission Statement:

We take our passion for learning and use it to create an outstanding school, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and

achieve their best.

We believe every child has the right to experience and explore their natural environment.

Through playing outdoors, whatever the weather, we encourage children to be children in order to become capable, confident,

healthy individuals.

Through their learning journeys, children develop independence to become creative contributors to their own education.

Our children are capable learners who achieve their potential and become ethical citizens of the world.

We are committed to our school being a safe and inclusive place, where learning is nurtured and encouraged in a happy and caring,

fun environment. We celebrate diversity so that from a very early age they are learning to live together and create a more

harmonious society.
