by childhood friends Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield

Starting out

Ben and Jerry's has multiple tours every day at their headquarters, each are 30 minutes and end with a sample of a new flavor in development.

Originally the two friends

wanted to start a bagel company

The two however,

got frustrated with the cost of the machinery and

became discouraged

Their distinctive style of ice cream was developed to compensate for Ben's anosmia

- Ben kept adding larger and larger chunks to the ice cream to satisfy his need for texture in food

in 1977 the two took a correspondence course on ice cream making from Pennsylvania State University

Every year, we recalculate the livable wage to make sure it’s keeping up with the actual cost of living in Vermont. In recent years, Ben & Jerry’s livable wage has been nearly twice the national minimum wage, landing at $16.92 in 2015.

Ben & Jerry’s commitment to economic justice starts with their employees.

$150 Million

Process

Ben & Jerry’s is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Unilever

They were undergoing a time of turmoil but overcame it.

Each store is independently owned

They have extraordinary employee engagement.

Not only does Ben & Jerry's recognize their effect on the environment and people and take action through the ingredients they source, but they also use environmentally friendly packaging. They are aware of their footprint on the world and make changes to their ice cream accordingly. Some of the changes they have made include composting waste, reducing paper use, improving the energy efficiency of stores and production plants and turning ice cream byproducts into chemical-free fertilizer.

Every time you pick up a product with the FAIRTRADE Mark (the green and blue symbol you see on each of the pints), you're helping small-scale farmers and their communities survive and succeed.

Ben and Jerry’s source five Fairtrade Certified ingredients.

In 2015, Ben & Jerry’s paid $1,895,778 in social premiums to small-scale farmers and farming co-ops around the world.

Their cows are rBGH (recombant bovine growth hormone) free.

They support GMO labeling on all products.

The company is doing its best to make sure Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream is produced in an environmentally sustainable way. They are constantly making changes in order to be the best that they can be.

On May 5, 1978, with a $12,000 investment, the two business partners opened an ice cream parlor in a renovated gas station in downtown Burlington, Vermont.

Free Cone Day

Ben and Jerry’s announced in 1999, with their “World’s Best Vanilla” ice cream that they would be planning to switch to more environmentally friendly packaging. They were true to their word and currently their paperboard packaging is Forest Stewardship Council certified, which means forest wildlife, biodiversity and sustainability are protected from the start.

Ben and Jerry rent space in an old spool and bobbin mill in Burlington and begin packing their ice cream in pints.

1983

1981

Ben & Jerry's ice cream is used to build "the world's largest ice cream sundae";

The sundae weighed 27,102 pounds.

The first franchised scoop shop opens in Shelburne, Vermont.

In order to reduce loops in their supply chain, they send dairy waste from the Vermont plants back to two of the farms that supply fresh dairy ingredients. The waste is then placed into methane digesters along with other farm waste, where it generates energy to power the farms.

After more than two years in the making, Ben & Jerry's new ECO-Pints are constructed from unbleached brown (kraft) paperboard, with an exterior clay coating that allows it to be printed with the familiar company logo. The new ECO-Pint is being printed and formed by the Sweetheart Cup Company at its facility outside of Baltimore, MD

Branding

Ben & Jerry’s company culture is reflected in their branding. Their brand identity is based on a set of values explained in their social, quality and economic missions.

Design

Merchandise

Their sense of humor

continues in

their merchandise.

Consumers love Ben & Jerry’s indulgent flavors and the brand’s effusive personality. The brand’s core visual identity is a blue sky with clouds and a green pasture. Their complex flavor combinations, are expressed using the flavor tower. The iconic Ben & Jerry’s cow frees the brand to convey the spirit, joy and whimsy.

New Design & Layout

OLD LAYOUT

The new design keeps young adults in mind as they spend more time in stores and relate to the brand’s message.

Cow cutouts and fun fixtures help create a rustic meets funky feel. There’s low lounge seating and sofa sets allowing laptop access.

Ben & Jerry's design flows into their store front.

The old stores were fun and friendly. But colors clashed and vied for attention with the ice cream. They had to simplify the design.
