Where did Pilgrims come from?
Name 2 things Indians helped the Pilgrims do.
- In England, the law was that everyone had to go to the Church of England.
- People from England came to America so they could go to a church they liked. These people were called "Pilgrims".
…So we call it Thanksgiving. We celebrate Thanksgiving every 4th Thursday in November
- The Pilgrims set sail for North America on a ship called the “Mayflower.”
- The trip to America was long and hard. There were storms and the ship was really crowded.
They were Thankful that they had friends, food, houses and a place to live where they could go to any church they wanted. They “Gave Thanks”…
When they got to America, it was winter and there was no food or houses. Many of the pilgrims died from sickness, starvation and freezing to death.
- Football is an important part of many Thanksgiving Day celebrations in the United States.
- The Detroit Lions have hosted a game every Thanksgiving Day since 1934 (except 1939-1944, during World War II).
- The Dallas Cowboys have hosted a game every Thanksgiving Day since 1966 (except 1975 and 1977).
- In Manhattan, New York City, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is held every Thanksgiving Day.
- This year is the 85th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
- This is the biggest and most famous Thanksgiving parade.
- Thanksgiving parades are also held in cities like Houston, Philadelphia and Detroit.
The Pilgrims were thankful, “We need to have a feast and celebrate. We’ll invite our friends, the Indians.”
People lived in America already. The pilgrims called them Indians, and we call them Native Americans. They saw the Pilgrims suffering and they decided to help them.
- They showed them how to grow corn and pumpkins.
- They helped them build houses out of the trees there.
