Things That Surprised Me

The Symbols of The Giver

  • The main character
  • A hero
  • The Giver's Apprentice
  • Gabriel as a symbol was a huge surprise to me.
  • In my research I discovered that people with brown eyes can have eye surgery to get blue eyes. A laser is used to burn the brown pigment away to reveal baby blue underneath.

The Color Red

The Giver is about a futuristic utopian society that stops at nothing to achieve perfection. A place were uniqueness is considered a hostile threat. A world that is gray and lacks any spark of color.

The Giver

The color red is a bold powerful color. Red has many emotions tied to it such as anger, love, passion etc. Powerful emotions that can be both negative and positive. Red also symbolizes rebellion, this is what the leaders want to completely eliminate from society. This color also represents as a warning of immediate danger. A warning headed by Jonas after he discovers what lies behind the utopian facade.

Why Was This society Created?

The utopian society is a perfect world. A place where there is no pain, suffering, or conflict. This society could have been built after a brutal war. One that was so great it destroyed every human on earth accept those i

lucky few in the utopia. This is challenged by the fact Jonas hears voices after he escapes the cities borders.

The Givers Blue Eyes

Citations

The River is the thresh-hold in the heroes journey. This is the point were Jonas can not go back. He is unable to undo any of the decision he makes after this point. The river also symbolizes death, this is were the people think they go after they are "released". Death itself can not be undone.

Blue eyes represent the strong bond between the Giver and the apprentice. It is a natural trademark of the Givers. Light eyes set the Givers apart from every on else in society. Even in today's society blue eyes are rare. This becomes even more so when the population is as low as the one in The Giver. Although it can not be explained, there seems to be a connection with blue eyes and the ability to both give and receive memories.
