Steps of Gene Therapy
Step 7: Protein or Hormone Production
Step 1: Cell Removal
The patients' cells are removed from his or her body.
The newly altered cells produce proteins or hormones.
Step 2: Virus Alteration
Step 6: Cell Injection
A virus is altered in a laboratory in order to stop it from reproducing.
The injection of the altered cells into the patient take place during this step.
Step 3: Gene Insertion
The altered virus is inserted with a gene.
Step 5: Cell Alteration
Step 4: Mixing
After the cells and virus are mixed, it becomes genetically altered.
The cells removed in step 1 and the altered virus from step 3 are mixed together.
