Animals are friends, not food:

Why Vegan Values are Humanist Values

What exactly is veganism?

  • "Veganism is a way of living that seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing and any other purpose.“ –Vegan Society definition, 1951

Why humanists?

A recent survey of 7,000 vegans showed that...

  • 43.38% were atheist/agnostic
  • 45.22% were "spiritual, but not religious."
  • 11.41% follow a major world religion

What about local, ethical, or sustainable meat?

So why do we eat animals?

  • A global vegan diet would reduce dietary emissions by 87%, compared to a token 8% for “sustainable meat and dairy.”
  • The Binding of Isaac
  • Local does not equal better.

Global Warming

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image,

in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created mankind in his own image…and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” (Genesis 1:26-28)

  • Chickens, turkeys, pigs, and cows are collectively the largest producer of methane in the US (which is 20x more destructive than CO2)
  • The meat, egg, and dairy industries produce 65% of the world’s nitrous oxide emissions (300x more destructive than CO2)
  • A meat-eater’s diet is responsible for 7x as many greenhouse gas emissions as a vegan’s diet.

Before This Presentation...

If you want to make a statement, ride your bike to the farmer's market. If you want to make a difference, go vegan.

Resource Consumption

  • I'm not PETA.
  • "But I know this vegan who..."
  • "I can't go vegan right this second!!"
  • "I care about PEOPLE."

So what can you do?

  • 50% of all water usage in the US goes toward raising animals for food
  • Raising animals for food uses up to 30% of the world's available land mass
  • 70% of grain and 98% of soy grown are fed to farmed animals
  • Don't eat animal products.
  • Boycott entertainment venues that use animals
  • Don't buy products tested on animals
  • Watch "Veducated" on Netflix

Health

Want to view this Prezi on your own?

"About 2,000 pounds of grains must be supplied to livestock in order to produce enough meat and other livestock products to support a person for a year, whereas 400 pounds of grain eaten directly will support a person for a year. Thus, a given quantity of grain eaten directly will feed 5 times as many people as it will if it is eaten indirectly by humans in the form of livestock products.”

According to the American Dietetic Association, “[Properly planned vegan diets] are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases….are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes.”

Animal Rights

  • Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness
  • Rights vs. Welfare (no cages vs. bigger cages)
