Power Napping/Nap time
/exercise:
- An energy source powering us up for the rest of the day
- Greatly influences/controls mood, body function, leading to productivity & improved behavior
- Melissa Wdowik: "Breakfast eaters tend to concentrate more efficiently, solve problems more easily, and have better performance. Skipping meals is a major problem during busy times and can lead to symptoms like fatigue and low motivation while increasing overeating habits."
- Better performance leads to students working more efficiently making school work go by faster and help them learn effectively
- Polyphasic sleepers- animals, etc. alternate sleep and wake cycles throughout the day
- Biphasic- (Ideal pattern for human sleep) long sleep at night, & shorter nap during the day
- Increases alertness-"NASA study found that a 40 minute nap increases alertness by 100%. Other studies have found that a 20 minute nap is more effective than either 200 mg of caffeine or a bout of exercise."
- Improves learning/memory-working on complex tasks, retention where recent memories go to the neocortex
Benefits of later school start times

Schedule
- People who got <6 hours of sleep were 55% more likely to crash
- 14% of drivers age 16-24 admit to falling asleep at the wheel
- One in six fatal crashes involved a drowsy driver
- Sleepy driving is involved in over 100,000 accidents in the US yearly, killing 1500 and injuring over 70,000
- Increase productivity and alertness- in 1996, Minnesota changed school start times to 7:25 to 8:30 in 1996 to 8:40
- In 1997, both suburban and urban schools have improved on tardiness, behavior, and graduation rate.
- Suburban students-who wake up earlier than urban students relatively-get an extra hour of sleep. They are also able to finish homework quicker during the day because of alertness
