It was dangerous living in a big city like London as it is the capital city of England. The Blitz started at 4:56pm on the 7th of September 1940.The air raid sirens wailed as the German Air Force, the luftwaffe, launched a massive raid on London. Over 350 bombers flew across the Channel from airfields in France and dropped 300 tonnes of bombs on the docks and streets of the East End of London.

Nearly 2,000 people were killed or wounded in London's first night of the Blitz.

Ambulance drivers

WRVS volunteers

Nurses

Planting vegetable and fruits

During the war, everyone had to cover their windows and doors at night (before sunset) with heavy blackout curtains, cardboard or paint. Thousands of people died in road accidents. To help prevent accidents white stripes were painted on the roads and on lamp-posts. People were encouraged to walk facing the traffic and men were advised to leave their shirt-tails hanging out so that they could be seen by cars with dimmed headlights.

By Kimmy Chen

During the war King George VI was three years into his reign.George wasn't suppose to be king so when King George V died in January 1936, his eldest son Edward became King. But in less than a year he gave up the throne in order to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson, and his younger brother, George had to take over being King. The King and Queen remained at Buckingham Palace throughout the War. They sent their daughters, Princesses Elizabeth (our present Queen) and Margaret, to Windsor Castle for safety.During the Blitz, Buckingham Palace suffered nine direct hits.
