The Children of Men is set in 2021 in a period of complete infertility. The human species is dying out because men are no longer fertile. Theodore Faron is a historian and philosopher. Theo has never been truly happy. Even when he was married he wasn't close to his wife or his daughter. Theo is confronted by a rebel group that feel Xan is a dictator. They want Theo to go to Xan with their demand before launching their revolution. Theo excepts, but only because he is drawn to one member of the group, Julian. The demands of the group include: shutting down the penal colony where convicted criminals are sent, putting an end to the organized suicide of the elderly, and holding an election. Xan of course, will not meet these demands. The group then moves forward with their revolution. This includes, sending out pamphlets and eliminating the option of suicide by Quietus. A Quietus was a gathering where the mass suicides were held. Miriam later comes and tells Theo one of the "Five Fishes" have been arrested and that the rest of them are on the run. He agrees to help them because of his feelings for Julian. Theo then finds out that Julian is pregnant. Theo doesn't like Rolf (Julian's husband) because of his relationship with Julian and for his hunger for power. But, the feeling is mutual. Rolf betrays the group after Luke is beaten to death by Omegas and Julian confesses that it was Luke's baby and not Rolf's. Omegas are the youngest of the generation. Theo, Julian, and Miriam are the only ones left and now have the state secretary police on their heels because of Rolf's betrayal. They set up camp in a woodland where Miriam delivers the baby. When Miriam leaves to go find water she is strangled to death. Julain and Theo wait for Xan in the woodshack. Xan and Theo have their last face-off and both shoot at each other. Xan misses but Theo shoots his cousin right in the heart. Theo takes the coronation ring from his cousin's finger and places it on his own. He then shows the baby to the Council. He now has a new state of being in which he has finally found love and power.
Man VS. Man:
This story struggles with a constant battle for power. There is a rivalry between Theo and Xan throughout the whole story. Xan obviously has accomplished more in his life at first but in the end Theo shoots Xan and becomes Warden of England. Along with this, he gains all of Xan's power.
Man VS. Society:
The SSP and the rest of the world is on "the lookout" for the "Five Fishes".
