Calypso - a Brief Overview

  • Originated in the Caribbean and traveled to Latin America
  • Ballroom dance that resembles a rumba
  • Uses a lot of percussion instruments (ex. steel drums, mostly)
  • Uses dance-band instruments (ex. guitars, mandolins)

A Brief Introduction to Tango

  • First used as a type of African drum dance
  • There are many theories on how Tango came to be, but we know tango was created by the poor and disadvantaged to forget about there worries In Buenos Aires, Argentina in the 18th century
  • The oldest Tango orchestra reptoire was from the 1890's by Rosendo Mendizabal

Guitar Part 1

-Brought to Latin America by the spanish in the 16th century

-Evolved from the vihuela and Latin guitarra

-In Latin music, there is a distinct, unique sound created by a mix of many cultures

-The classical guitar is also known as the spanish guitar

-Influenced by African and Native Indian rhythms

-Used in tango and calypso

-The main instrument in bossanova and some variations of samba

-Tarrega Method

Vihuela

The Bandoneon

  • Invented around 1850 in Germany
  • Unknown when it arrived in Latin America
  • Tango was originally too fast for it
  • Became a main instrument in tango music
  • Seems like an accordion (but it's not)
  • Has a nearly 5 octave range

Steel Drums

Guitar Part 2

  • In the renaissance (14th century through to the 17th century) guitar was not considered a serious instrument
  • Guitar became popular in european countries in the 16th and 17th century
  • People believed that the guitar couldn't reach the demands of a classical level
  • In the 19th century Fernando Sor set out the challenge that statement, and bring guitar to the high music level possible.
  • Les Paul created a prototype electric guitar that became very popular in the late 1940s
  • Now the guitar is the most popular instrument in the U.S
