The Screen Play
Analysis
Screen Play Efficiency
What is a screen play in football?
What I did
- Random number generator (1-16)
- Watched eight NFL games from December 29, 2013 (last regular season games)
- Recorded screen plays that were executed and determined the percentage used and how many yards were gained with each screen play.
- Utilizes short passes rather than traditional up field passes and strategic blocking by 2 or 3 offensive lineman and other skill players.
- After the running back or wide receiver catches the pass and the blocks for them are set, the player runs towards the end zone.
- Often used to slow down defenses when they are pressuring the quarterback for a number of consecutive plays.
Discussion
- Do you think screen plays should be used more in football?
- Should screen plays be used more to keep players from getting overly aggressive and pose more risk of injury?
- What position in football do you think has the biggest risk of a serious injury?
What I Learned
- Screen plays are not as prominent in the NFL as I thought they would be before beginning my research.
- Both NFC and AFC teams run about the same amount of screen plays per game.
- Approximately 22% of screen plays run by teams result in a gain of 9 or more yards.
