Is the increase in allergies due to the increase in genetically modified foods?

98% of participants knew someone with an allergy

1. Can you see the difference?

2. Can you taste the difference?

3. What is the difference?

Evidence for High Prevelance of Allergies

1 in 4 participants in this school have a food allergy

1 in 20 children around the world have a food allergy

Increase in allergies

Facts about GMO's

70% of our food in chain grocery stores is genetically modified

GMO crop production has been on the rise since its start in the early 1990's. Now around 22 countries, both developing and developed are avid producers.

Nearly two decads after genetic engineered crops have been made available in stores, human studies are only now starting to be performed...except for in the US

According to a study released in 2013 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies among children increased approximately 50% between 1997

and 2011.

Children are 3 to 4 times more susceptible to allergies

As many as 15 million people have food allergies

9 million of those being adults

4 million of those being children

so 1 in 20 children have a food allergy

What is a GMO?

Can you differentiate GM products from Organic products?

Common beliefs as to why allergies are increasing

GM foods are foods that have altered or foreign genes inserted into their DNA in order to increase effeciency, size of yield,

They are created by splicing genes from the DNA of one organism into the DNA of another possibly unrelated organism.

For example, in some experiments, strawberries have been spliced with fish genes, rice and tobacco with human genes and even lettuce with rat genes.

Genetics: Certain genes provide specific dispositions that make individuals more susceptible to allergies. {68% of your peers believe genes are responsible for allergies}

The Hygiene Hypothesis: We are becoming too clean and our immune systems are suffering the consequences.

Changes to the foods we eat: Genetically modified foods put our bodies at risk for being exposed to new proteins and DNA typically not found in the foods we should consume.

Allergies

My hypothesis

Opposing Viewpoints

Pro GMOs:

  • Greater net productivity
  • Greater profit
  • More for consumer's money
  • Costs of plants decrease

Against GMOs:

  • Health risks in humans unresarchd
  • Environmental tolls from production of these products

The increase in allergies is supported by the recent increase in consumption of genetically modified foods.

Results from survey prove how prevalent allergies are even in our small scaled community.

We can draw connections to the foods we eat with brands such as

  • General Mills and Kellogg's cereals for breakfast
  • Aunt Jemima's pancakes
  • Pepperidge Farm products for our bread for our sandwiches
  • Hershey's candies
  • Coca Cola beverages

A story to convince you...

In September 2000, the GM corn variety known as StarLink was found in corn tortillas, although it was only approved for animal feed at the time. The discovery led to more than 30 cases of varying human health reactions, with at least 7 of those consistent with symptoms common in severe food allergies. To reiterate, according to the CDC, food allergies in the US have increased by nearly 50 percent between the years of 1997 and 2011, which corresponds directly to the rise in the 4 most commonly planted GMO seeds in the US: corn, soy, canola, and cotton. So is there a link between GM foods and food allergies?

My Hypothesis Revisited

The matching trends on the previous graphs provide extremely sound evidence for the linkage between allergies and genetically modified foods.

The way a GMO is created should be investigated more, being that this is a matter of genetically altering the DNA makeup of organisms.

  • Since genes are the instruction codes for proteins, and proteins are implicated in allergic reactions, GM foods may be introducing allergenic proteins into our food that have never before been part of the human food supply.

Allergies & GMO's

Define Organic: produce that are grown without the use of pesticides, syntehtic fertilizers, sewage slude, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing raidation. Animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products do not take antibiotics or growth hormones.

Define GMO: an organism or microorganism whose genetic material has been altered by means of genetic engineering
