Hypothesis

Conclusions

What are the key factors contributing to the resurgence in radical nationalism in 21st century Russian politics?

To what extent has President Putin's adoption of neo-Eurasianist policies contributed to this?

Why does it matter?

  • Russia's internal/external sovereignty at stake
  • Increasing global concern over Putin's political motives/intentions
  • Contributes to study of nationalism; a security priority?

As a national ideology, neo-Eurasianism is merely a ruse for incorporating nationalist ideals into state policies, thereby accounting for the resurgence of right-wing extremism under Putin's regime.

In Layman's terms

A "Trojan horse" for political extremism (hence the graphic)

Regardless of intention or motive, the negative implications of neo-Eurasianism can already be seen in the resurgence of radicalized nationalism in Russia.

'Managed nationalism' as an instrument of political control has already shown to be a threat to the Kremlin and neighboring governments

Conventional wisdom

"Identity" politics

Neo-Eurasianism:

1. Identity = key to interpreting Russian politics (past and present)

2. National ideology determines state interests/policies

3. National security depends on creating/maintaining a positive, clearly-defined self-image and role in the global community

  • Predominant ideology in Putin-era politics
  • Championed by extremist Aleksandr Dugin
  • Geopolitical interests; (Mackinder's "Heartland Theory", Eurasian Union, Multi-polar shift)

The 1989 dissolution of the communism-led Soviet Union left Russians de-stabilized and devoid of a national ideology.

Ideological crises pose a very serious threat to Russia and the surrounding regions.

Managed Nationalism in practice

  • 2000 Chechen war
  • 2005 Creation of Nashi
  • 2006 Bronze Soldier
  • 2008 Georgian War
  • Eurasian Union of 2015
