5E Cycle In Depth
- Independently read the article, annotating, and writing key notes in margins.
- Be ready to discuss each stage and apply knowledge to your lesson plans.
Scientists Must Collaborate!
5E Introduction!
Objectives:
- PTs will implement a 5E lesson structure into their lesson plans.
- PTs will be able to execute an inquiry lab in the classroom with clear directions and effective procedures.
- PTs will develop a list of inquiry labs (engage/explore activities) to be used in their upcoming units.
- PTs will be able to implement grouping strategies into their classroom that increase student participation and understanding of directions.
- Engage - Hook
- Explore - Challenge/Activate Prior Knowledge
- Explain - Teach New Concept
- Elaborate - Practice (we do/you do)
- Evaluate - Exit Ticket
- Work in small groups based on current grade levels.
- Go around and tell each other your current unit of study and the major topics of your next unit.
- Write out inquiry ideas (engage/explore) for your common units on the poster paper at your table.
- Whole group share out in 15minutes!
Apply our Knowledge!
Density Lesson Plan Objectives:
- SWBAT to compare the densities of various substances and make accurate predictions on which liquids/objects will float or sink.
- SWBAT calculate density using the formula D = M/V.
Density 5E Lesson Plan
- Engage -
- Explore -
- Explain -
- Elaborate -
- Evaluate - Always create daily exit ticket first (after you write objectives)!
Why the 5E Cycle?
- Benefits:
- Increases understanding of scientific concepts.
- Increases student engagement.
- Builds student-investment in your class.
- Collaboration with peers.
- Reduces negative behaviors.
- Happy Students = Building Relationships
Is engage/explore portion of the lesson plan always a lab?
