Developing a Pre- and Post-Test
What is it?
(Pre and post test)
- Create questions that focus on the primary course objectives.
- Only include questions to which there were clear answers provided during the course.
- Develop a test that will take between 10-25 minutes to complete.
A measurement of the learning received during the research as a
result of comparing what the researcher knew before in a pretest and after the research experience in a post-test.
STEPS
why to use a pre-test:
Implementing a Pre- and Post-Test
- Assign random numbers to each participant.
- To determine a starting point or the amount of pre-existing knowledge on the research topic
- Administer the pre-test before beginning the training.
- Administer the post-test at the end of the training.
- To inform the researcher about topics that are or are not needed to cover in the research based on student’s previous knowledge
POST-TEST
PRE-TEST
1) Select the control group
2) Administer the pre-test to all the subjects
3) Begin the corresponding training
4) administer the post-test to all the subjects (Same questions or similar questions of the pre-test)
5) assess the amount of change on the value of the dependent variable from the pre-test to the post-test for each group separately.
- To point out to the student the learning level of the research topic
why to use a post-test:
Analyzing Pre- and Post-Test Results
- To measure the learning as a result of the research experience
- The final step is to analyze the results of the pre and post-tests both by participant and by question.
- To analyze the appropriateness of the research objectives
- Create a spreadsheet where each row is a single participant
- To target any instructional needs to improve the research
- Look at changes in correct responses by individual.Did each individual’s score increase? Are there any discernable patterns indicating which participant scores increased the most?
- Next, look at changes in knowledge by question to uncover which parts of the training were most effective,
- Review all the data to make sure you haven’t missed any clues and document any additional interesting findings.
