Clive has an impaired Short term memory this is shown as he has a poorer than average duration in STM of only 7 seconds. Clive is unable to rehearse new information as he looses the sentence he is in and cannot remember the question when giving an answer.
Clive has not been able to transfer any new long term memories since his illness.
Clive has difficulty retrieving his existing Long term memories (e.g.the tastes of foods). Interestingly however he is able to remember procedural memories (e.g. playing piano).
This case study demonstrates how the short-term memory and long term memory are different stores as one store is more impaired than the other illustrating that these therefore must be independent of one another.
THIS IS BOTH A STRENGTH AND A WEAKNESS FOR MSM.
Participants were asked to perform a sentence checking task whilst saying aloud a list of six digits. The participan found this difficult because the task required the use of two different systems (articulatory loop and visuo-spatial sketchpad).
- Under developed.
- Little is known about it, despite its importance.
- May be split for different functions.
- Simplistic and vague.
They asked participants to recall a list of words either immediately after the list was presented or after a 30 second when they had completed a distracter task. G&C found that participants in the immediate recall could recall more words at the beginning and end of the list, whereas the people in the second condition seemed to recall more words from the beginning.
K.F. had a motorcycle accident which affected his memory. His STM was affected very badly, however his LTM was relatively fine.
WEAKNESS FOR:
MSM.
STRENGTH FOR:
WMM.
- A weakness for WMM.
- In terms of musical memory, we are able to listen to music without it impairing other acoustic tasks.
- According to the WMM, this should be unsuccessful.
