Adam works up the courage to go back home, but when he gets there, he smells smoke. His mother had fallen down and left a pot on the stove. He conquers his fear of thresh holds because he knew that if he took the time to clear the door his mom would've been in danger. Thor, from Group, shows up and helps Adam call the Police and his dad. Adam then realizes that his mother was the one who wrote the threatening letters.
After Adam told the authorities about his mother, he moved to his dad and step mom's place. Adam's mother is now receiving the help she needs and so is Adam. The church is now involved so they can help Adam recover from the trauma he endured.
As Adam's thresh hold compulsion escalates so much that he eventually can not enter his own house. He calls his dad to come pick him up, but is very embarrassed. He doesn't try to enter his home for another 2 weeks.
Robyn is in a stage of remission with her OCD. Adam doesn't want to hold her back in life, so he makes the decision to break off their relationship.
Adam stopped crying when he was 11 years old. In the final scene of this book, Adam breaks down and cries for his mother, himself, and Robyn. He has finally realized that he is not alone. This is a major break through for Adam and was a perfect ending to the book.
The letters to Adam's mom begin to increase. Her behaviour changes dramatically and her hoarding gets worse. Adam is lost and doesn't know how to help her. He has told Group about the letters, but refuses to expand on the issue with Chuck. Robyn is increasingly improving and Adam is worried that he his holding her back.
Adam's compulsions begin to worsen. Adam then begins to up his medication without asking his doctor or therapist. He has to lie to his therapist Chuck about needing a new prescription for his Ativan.
Adam begins to get closer with Robyn. He starts to teach her how to be Catholic because religion is helping Robyn get better from her OCD. He also begins to trust her and tells her about the threatening letters that his mom has been receiving. She encourages him to tell the Group and eventually he does.
Adam's mom begins to receive threatening letters and because of the added stress, Adam's compulsions get worse. His compulsions are,
- Counting/Tapping and,
- Clearing Thresh holds
Adam Ross attends an OCD Support Group. Once there, Adam meets Robyn Plummer, whom he instantly falls in love with. In Group, they choose a superhero that they will "turn into." Robyn chooses Robin from "Batman and Robin" So, Adam chooses Batman in attempt to make her notice him.
Adam follows Robyn home and sees that she walks through the cemetery. After she leaves, Adam goes to see what tombstone she had stopped at. He finds her mother's grave under a large oak tree. Adam comes to the conclusion that he needs to save Robyn. So, Adam swears to get better for Robyn.
